6:22 “Blessed are you when people ¹  hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject you as evil ²  on account of the Son of Man!

Lukas 19:14

19:14 But his citizens ³  hated ⁴  him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man ⁵  to be king ⁶  over us!’

[6:22]  ¹ tn This is a generic use of ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpo"), referring to both males and females.

[6:22]  ² tn Or “disdain you”; Grk “cast out your name as evil.” The word “name” is used here as a figure of speech to refer to the person as a whole.

[6:22]  sn The phrase when they exclude you and insult you and reject you as evil alludes to a person being ostracized and socially isolated because of association with the Son of Man, Jesus.

[19:14]  ³ tn Or “subjects.” Technically these people were not his subjects yet, but would be upon his return. They were citizens of his country who opposed his appointment as their king; later the newly-appointed king will refer to them as his “enemies” (v. 27).

[19:14]  ⁴ tn The imperfect is intense in this context, suggesting an ongoing attitude.

[19:14]  ⁵ tn Grk “this one” (somewhat derogatory in this context).

[19:14]  ⁶ tn Or “to rule.”
