Lukas 1:64

1:64 Immediately ¹  Zechariah’s ²  mouth was opened and his tongue ³  released, ⁴  and he spoke, blessing God.

12:58 As you are going with your accuser before the magistrate, ⁵  make an effort to settle with him on the way, so that he will not drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, ⁶  and the officer throw you into prison.

Lukas 13:12

13:12 When ⁷  Jesus saw her, he called her to him ⁸  and said, “Woman, ⁹  you are freed ¹⁰  from your infirmity.” ¹¹ 

[1:64]  ¹ tn Grk “And immediately.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[1:64]  ² tn Grk “his”; the referent (Zechariah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:64]  ³ sn The mention of both mouth and tongue here is a figure called zeugma and emphasizes that the end of the temporary judgment came instantly and fully upon Zechariah’s expression of faith in naming the child. He had learned to trust and obey God during his short period of silence. He had learned from his trial.

[1:64]  ⁴ tn “Released” is implied; in the Greek text both στόμα (stoma) and γλῶσσα (glwssa) are subjects of ἀνεῴχθη (anewcqh), but this would be somewhat redundant in English.

[12:58]  ⁵ sn The term magistrate (ἄρχων, arcwn) refers to an official who, under the authority of the government, serves as judge in legal cases (see L&N 56.29).

[12:58]  ⁶ sn The officer (πράκτωρ, praktwr) was a civil official who functioned like a bailiff and was in charge of debtor’s prison. The use of the term, however, does not automatically demand a Hellenistic setting (BDAG 859 s.v.; K. H. Rengstorf, TDNT 8:539; C. Maurer, TDNT 6:642).

[13:12]  ⁷ tn The participle ἰδών (idwn) has been taken temporally. Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[13:12]  ⁸ tn The verb προσεφώνησεν (prosefwnhsen) has been translated as “called (her) to (him),” with the direct object (“her”) and the indirect object (“him”) both understood.

[13:12]  ⁹ sn Woman was a polite form of address (see BDAG 208-9 s.v. γυνή), similar to “Madam” or “Ma’am” used in English in different regions.

[13:12]  ¹⁰ tn Or “released.”

[13:12]  ¹¹ tn Or “sickness.”
