21:37 As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, ¹  he said ²  to the commanding officer, ³  “May I say ⁴  something to you?” The officer ⁵  replied, ⁶  “Do you know Greek? ⁷

22:24 the commanding officer ⁸  ordered Paul ⁹  to be brought back into the barracks. ¹⁰  He told them ¹¹  to interrogate Paul ¹²  by beating him with a lash ¹³  so that he could find out the reason the crowd ¹⁴  was shouting at Paul ¹⁵  in this way.

In Greek the term χιλίαρχος (ciliarco") literally described the “commander of a thousand,” but it was used as the standard translation for the Latin tribunus militum or tribunus militare, the military tribune who commanded a cohort of 600 men.

The lashing would be done with a whip of leather thongs with pieces of metal or bone attached to the ends.
