[8:2]  1 tn Some (e.g., NIV) translate the preterite verb forms in this verse as past perfects (e.g., “had been closed”), for it seems likely that the sources of the water would have stopped before the waters receded.

[11:11]  2 tn The word “other” is not in the Hebrew text, but is supplied for stylistic reasons.

[11:13]  3 tn The word “other” is not in the Hebrew text, but is supplied for stylistic reasons.

[11:13]  4 tc The reading of the MT is followed in vv. 11-12; the LXX reads, “And [= when] Arphaxad had lived thirty-five years, [and] he fathered [= became the father of] Cainan. And after he fathered [= became the father of] Cainan, Arphaxad lived four hundred and thirty years and fathered [= had] [other] sons and daughters, and [then] he died. And [= when] Cainan had lived one hundred and thirty years, [and] he fathered [= became the father of] Sala [= Shelah]. And after he fathered [= became the father of] Sala [= Shelah], Cainan lived three hundred and thirty years and fathered [= had] [other] sons and daughters, and [then] he died.” See also the note on “Shelah” in Gen 10:24; the LXX reading also appears to lie behind Luke 3:35-36.

[11:15]  5 tn Here and in vv. 16, 19, 21, 23, 25 the word “other” is not in the Hebrew text, but is supplied for stylistic reasons.

[13:5]  6 tn Heb “was going.”

[13:5]  7 tn The Hebrew idiom is “to Lot…there was,” the preposition here expressing possession.

[24:7]  8 tn Or “the land of my birth.”

[24:7]  9 tn Heb “and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying.”

[24:7]  10 tn Or “his messenger.”

[24:7]  11 tn Heb “before you and you will take.”

[24:18]  12 tn Heb “and she hurried and lowered.”

[24:23]  13 tn Heb “and he said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’” The order of the introductory clause has been rearranged in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[43:28]  14 tn Heb “and they bowed low and they bowed down.” The use of synonyms here emphasizes the brothers’ humility.

[45:24]  15 tn Heb “do not be stirred up in the way.” The verb means “stir up.” Some understand the Hebrew verb רָגָז (ragaz, “to stir up”) as a reference to quarreling (see Prov 29:9, where it has this connotation), but in Exod 15:14 and other passages it means “to fear.” This might refer to a fear of robbers, but more likely it is an assuring word that they need not be fearful about returning to Egypt. They might have thought that once Jacob was in Egypt, Joseph would take his revenge on them.
