Joseph’s Brothers in Egypt

42:1 When Jacob heard ¹  there was grain in Egypt, he ²  said to his sons, “Why are you looking at each other?” ³

45:20 Don’t worry ⁴  about your belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt will be yours.’”

47:28 Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; the years ⁵  of Jacob’s life were 147 in all.

50:14 After he buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, along with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to bury his father.

50:26 So Joseph died at the age of 110. ⁶  After they embalmed him, his body ⁷  was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

[42:1]  ² tn Heb “Jacob.” Here the proper name has been replaced by the pronoun (“he”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[42:1]  ³ sn Why are you looking at each other? The point of Jacob’s question is that his sons should be going to get grain rather than sitting around doing nothing. Jacob, as the patriarch, still makes the decisions for the whole clan.
