44:20 We said to my lord, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young boy who was born when our father was old. 5  The boy’s 6  brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, 7  and his father loves him.’

[34:25]  1 tn Heb “a man his sword.”

[34:25]  2 tn Heb “and they came upon the city, [which was] secure.” In this case “secure” means the city was caught unprepared and at peace, not expecting an attack.

[38:11]  3 tn Heb “said.”

[38:11]  4 tn Heb “Otherwise he will die, also he, like his brothers.”

[38:11]  sn I don’t want him to die like his brothers. This clause explains that Judah had no intention of giving Shelah to Tamar for the purpose of the levirate marriage. Judah apparently knew the nature of his sons, and feared that God would be angry with the third son and kill him as well.

[44:20]  5 tn Heb “and a small boy of old age,” meaning that he was born when his father was elderly.

[44:20]  6 tn Heb “his”; the referent (the boy just mentioned) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[44:20]  7 tn Heb “he, only he, to his mother is left.”
