32:13 Jacob ¹  stayed there that night. Then he sent ²  as a gift ³  to his brother Esau

2:11 As they came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down ⁴  and worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, ⁵  and myrrh. ⁶ 

[32:13]  ¹ tn Heb “and he”; the referent (Jacob) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[32:13]  ² tn Heb “and he took from that which was going into his hand,” meaning that he took some of what belonged to him.

[32:13]  ³ sn The Hebrew noun translated gift can in some contexts refer to the tribute paid by a subject to his lord. Such a nuance is possible here, because Jacob refers to Esau as his lord and to himself as Esau’s servant (v. 4).

[2:11]  ⁴ tn Grk “they fell down.” BDAG 815 s.v. πίπτω 1.b.α.ב has “fall down, throw oneself to the ground as a sign of devotion, before high-ranking persons or divine beings.”

[2:11]  ⁵ sn Frankincense refers to the aromatic resin of certain trees, used as a sweet-smelling incense (L&N 6.212).

[2:11]  ⁶ sn Myrrh consisted of the aromatic resin of certain shrubs (L&N 6.208). It was used in preparing a corpse for burial.
