[17:11]  1 tn Or “sign.”

[17:15]  2 tn Heb “[As for] Sarai your wife, you must not call her name Sarai, for Sarah [will be] her name.”

[17:15]  3 sn Sarah. The name change seems to be a dialectical variation, both spellings meaning “princess” or “queen.” Like the name Abram, the name Sarai symbolized the past. The new name Sarah, like the name Abraham, would be a reminder of what God intended to do for Sarah in the future.

[21:8]  4 tn Heb “made.”

[21:8]  5 sn Children were weaned closer to the age of two or three in the ancient world, because infant mortality was high. If an infant grew to this stage, it was fairly certain he or she would live. Such an event called for a celebration, especially for parents who had waited so long for a child.

[27:34]  6 tn The temporal clause is introduced with the temporal indicator and has the infinitive as its verb.

[27:34]  7 tn Heb “and he yelled [with] a great and bitter yell to excess.”

[39:7]  8 tn Heb “she lifted up her eyes toward,” an expression that emphasizes her deliberate and careful scrutiny of him.

[39:7]  9 tn Heb “lie with me.” Here the expression “lie with” is a euphemism for sexual intercourse.

[39:7]  sn The story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife has long been connected with the wisdom warnings about the strange woman who tries to seduce the young man with her boldness and directness (see Prov 5-7, especially 7:6-27). [40:9]  10 tn The Hebrew text adds “and he said to him.” This has not been translated because it is redundant in English.

[43:33]  11 tn Heb “the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth.”

[43:33]  12 sn The brothers’ astonishment indicates that Joseph arranged them in this way. They were astonished because there was no way, as far as they were concerned, that Joseph could have known the order of their birth.
