Yesaya 9:5

9:5 Indeed every boot that marches and shakes the earth ¹ 

and every garment dragged through blood

is used as fuel for the fire.

Yesaya 34:9

34:9 Edom’s ²  streams will be turned into pitch

and her soil into brimstone;

her land will become burning pitch.

Yeremia 2:15

2:15 Like lions his enemies roar victoriously over him;

they raise their voices in triumph. ³ 

They have laid his land waste;

his cities have been burned down and deserted. ⁴ 

[9:5]  ¹ tn Heb “Indeed every boot marching with shaking.” On the meaning of סְאוֹן (sÿ’on, “boot”) and the related denominative verb, both of which occur only here, see HALOT 738 s.v. סְאוֹן.

[34:9]  ² tn Heb “her”; the referent (Edom) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[2:15]  ³ tn Heb “Lions shout over him, they give out [raise] their voices.”

[2:15]  sn The reference to lions is here a metaphor for the Assyrians (and later the Babylonians, see Jer 50:17). The statement about lions roaring over their prey implies that the prey has been vanquished.

[2:15]  ⁴ tn Heb “without inhabitant.”
