Gideon Reduces the Ranks

7:1 Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and his men ³  got up the next morning and camped near the spring of Harod. ⁴  The Midianites ⁵  were camped north of them near the hill of Moreh in the valley.

11:11 The next day Saul placed the people in three groups. They went to the Ammonite camp during the morning watch and struck them ⁶  down until the hottest part of the day. The survivors scattered; no two of them remained together.

[7:16]  ² tn Heb “the jars.” The noun has been replaced by the pronoun (“them”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[7:16]  sn They hid the torches inside the earthenware jars to disguise their approach and to keep the torches from being extinguished by the breeze.

[7:1]  ³ tn Heb “and all the people who were with him.”

[7:1]  ⁴ sn The name Harod means, ironically, “trembling.”

[7:1]  ⁵ tn Heb “Midian.” The LXX reads “and Amalek” (cf. v. 12; 6:33).

[11:11]  ⁶ tn Heb “Ammon.” By metonymy the name “Ammon” is used collectively for the soldiers in the Ammonite army.
