6:15 Gideon ¹  said to him, “But Lord, ²  how ³  can I deliver Israel? Just look! My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my family.” ⁴

10:15 But the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned. You do to us as you see fit, ⁶  but deliver us today!” ⁷

11:39 After two months she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. She died a virgin. ⁸  Her tragic death gave rise to a custom in Israel. ⁹ 

[6:15]  ¹ tn Heb “he”; the referent (Gideon) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[6:15]  ² tn Note the switch to אֲדֹנָי (’adonay, “Lord”). Gideon seems aware that he is speaking to someone other than, and superior to, the messenger, whom he addressed as אֲדֹנִי (’adoniy, “my lord”) in v. 13.

[6:15]  ⁴ tn Heb “in my father’s house.”

[7:17]  ⁵ tn Or “look.”

[10:15]  ⁶ tn Heb “according to all whatever is good in your eyes.”

[10:15]  ⁷ sn You do to us as you see fit, but deliver us today. The request seems contradictory, but it can be explained in one of two ways. They may be asking for relief from their enemies and direct discipline from God’s hand. Or they may mean, “In the future you can do whatever you like to us, but give us relief from what we’re suffering right now.”

[11:39]  ⁸ tn Heb “She had never known a man.” Some understand this to mean that her father committed her to a life of celibacy, but the disjunctive clause (note the vav + subject + verb pattern) more likely describes her condition at the time the vow was fulfilled. (See G. F. Moore, Judges [ICC], 302-3; C. F. Burney, Judges, 324.) She died a virgin and never experienced the joys of marriage and motherhood.
