[1:1]  1 tn The Hebrew verb translated “asked” (שָׁאַל, shaal) refers here to consulting the Lord through a prophetic oracle; cf. NAB “consulted.”

[1:1]  2 tn Heb “Who should first go up for us against the Canaanites to attack them?”

[1:9]  3 tn Or “foothills”; Heb “the Shephelah.”

[11:20]  4 tn Heb “Sihon.” The proper name (“Sihon”) has been replaced in the translation by the pronoun (“he”) because of English style; a repetition of the proper name here would be redundant in English.

[11:20]  5 tn Heb “all his people” (also in the following verse).

[11:25]  6 tn The Hebrew grammatical constructions of all three rhetorical questions indicate emphasis, which “really” and “dare to” are intended to express in the translation.
