[48:21]  1 tn The pronouns translated “you,” “you,” and “your” in this verse are plural in the Hebrew text.

[48:1]  2 tn Heb “and one said.” With no expressed subject in the Hebrew text, the verb can be translated with the passive voice.

[20:3]  3 tc The LXX and the Syriac Peshitta lack the word “again.”

[20:3]  4 tn The infinitive absolute appears before the finite verb for emphasis.

[20:3]  5 tn Heb “said,” that is, to himself. So also in v. 25.

[27:1]  6 tn The form אַל־תִּתְהַלֵּל (’al-tithallel) is the Hitpael jussive negated; it is from the common verb “to praise,” and so in this setting means “to praise oneself” or “to boast.”

[27:1]  sn The verse rules out one’s overconfident sense of ability to control the future. No one can presume on the future.

[27:1]  7 sn The word “tomorrow” is a metonymy of subject, meaning what will be done tomorrow, or in the future in general.

[27:1]  8 sn The expression “you do not know” balances the presumption of the first line, reminding the disciple of his ignorance and therefore his need for humility (e.g., Matt 6:34; Luke 12:20; Jas 4:13-16).

[9:10]  9 tn Heb “Whatever your hand finds to do.”

[9:10]  10 tn Heb “Sheol.”

[9:10]  11 tn Or “where you are about to go.”

[38:1]  12 tn Heb “was sick to the point of dying”; NRSV “became sick and was at the point of death.”

[38:3]  13 tn Heb “walked before you.” For a helpful discussion of the background and meaning of this Hebrew idiom, see M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 254.

[38:3]  14 tn Heb “and with a complete heart”; KJV, ASV “with a perfect heart.”

[38:3]  15 tn Heb “and that which is good in your eyes I have done.”

[38:3]  16 tn Heb “wept with great weeping”; NCV “cried loudly”; TEV “began to cry bitterly.”

[4:14]  17 tn Grk “who” (continuing the description of the people of v. 13). Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[4:14]  18 tn Or “you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow.”

[4:14]  19 tn Or “a vapor.” The Greek word ἀτμίς (atmis) denotes a swirl of smoke arising from a fire (cf. Gen 19:28; Lev 16:13; Joel 2:30 [Acts 2:19]; Ezek 8:11).
