Defeat of King Og of Bashan

3:1 Next we set out on ³  the route to Bashan, ⁴  but King Og of Bashan and his whole army ⁵  came out to meet us in battle at Edrei. ⁶ 

1 Samuel 4:7-8

4:7 The Philistines were scared because they thought that gods had come to the camp. ⁷  They said, “Too bad for ⁸  us! We’ve never seen anything like this! 4:8 Too bad for us! Who can deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all sorts of plagues in the desert!

[14:14]  ¹ tn The word order places emphasis on “the Lord” (Heb “Yahweh”).

[14:14]  ² tn The imperfect tense needs to be interpreted in contrast to all that Yahweh will be doing. It may be given a potential imperfect nuance (as here), or it may be obligatory to follow the command to stand firm: “you must be still.”

[3:1]  ³ tn Heb “turned and went up.”

[3:1]  ⁴ sn Bashan. This plateau country, famous for its oaks (Isa 2:13) and cattle (Deut 32:14; Amos 4:1), was north of Gilead along the Yarmuk River.

[3:1]  ⁵ tn Heb “people.”

[3:1]  ⁶ sn Edrei is probably modern Deràa, 60 mi (95 km) south of Damascus (see Num 21:33; Josh 12:4; 13:12, 31; also mentioned in Deut 1:4).

[4:7]  ⁷ tn The Hebrew text has a direct quote, “because they said, ‘Gods have come to the camp.’” Even though the verb translated “have come” is singular, the following subject should be taken as plural (“gods”), as v. 8 indicates. Some emend the verb to a plural form.

[4:7]  ⁸ tn Traditionally “woe to.” They thought disaster was imminent.
