Ulangan 32:13

32:13 He enabled him ¹  to travel over the high terrain of the land,

and he ate of the produce of the fields.

He provided honey for him from the cliffs, ² 

and olive oil ³  from the hardest of ⁴  rocks, ⁵ 

Yosua 10:24-25

10:24 When they brought the kings out to Joshua, he ⁶  summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the troops who accompanied him, “Come here ⁷  and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came up ⁸  and put their feet on their necks. 10:25 Then Joshua said to them, “Don’t be afraid and don’t panic! ⁹  Be strong and brave, for the Lord will do the same thing to all your enemies you fight.

Habakuk 3:19

3:19 The sovereign Lord is my source of strength. ¹⁰ 

He gives me the agility of a deer; ¹¹ 

he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. ¹²

[32:13]  ¹ tn The form of the suffix on this verbal form indicates that the verb is a preterite, not an imperfect. As such it simply states the action factually. Note as well the preterites with vav (ו) consecutive that follow in the verse.

[32:13]  ² tn Heb “he made him suck honey from the rock.”

[32:13]  ³ tn Heb “oil,” but this probably refers to olive oil; see note on the word “rock” at the end of this verse.

[32:13]  ⁴ tn Heb “flinty.”

[32:13]  ⁵ sn Olive oil from rock probably suggests olive trees growing on rocky ledges and yet doing so productively. See E. H. Merrill, Deuteronomy (NAC), 415; cf. TEV “their olive trees flourished in stony ground.”

[10:24]  ⁶ tn Heb “Joshua.” The translation has replaced the proper name with the pronoun (“he”) because a repetition of the proper name here would be redundant according to English style.

[10:24]  ⁷ tn Or “Draw near.”

[10:24]  ⁸ tn Or “drew near.”

[10:25]  ⁹ tn Or perhaps “and don’t get discouraged!”

[3:19]  ¹⁰ tn Or perhaps, “is my wall,” that is, “my protector.”

[3:19]  ¹¹ tn Heb “he makes my feet like those of deer.”

[3:19]  ¹² tn Heb “he makes me walk on my high places.”

[3:19]  sn Difficult times are coming, but Habakkuk is confident the Lord will sustain him. Habakkuk will be able to survive, just as the deer negotiates the difficult rugged terrain of the high places without injury.

[3:19]  ¹³ tn Heb “For the leader, on my stringed instruments.”
