Ayub 36:8

36:8 But if they are bound in chains, ¹ 

and held captive by the cords of affliction,

2:3 They say, ²  “Let’s tear off the shackles they’ve put on us! ³ 

Let’s free ourselves from ⁴  their ropes!”

[36:8]  ¹ tn Dhorme thinks that the verse is still talking about kings, who may be in captivity. But this diverts attention from Elihu’s emphasis on the righteous.

[2:3]  ² tn The words “they say” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The quotation represents the words of the rebellious kings.

[2:3]  ³ tn Heb “their (i.e., the Lord’s and the king’s) shackles.” The kings compare the rule of the Lord and his vice-regent to being imprisoned.

[2:3]  ⁴ tn Heb “throw off from us.”
