21:12 They sing ¹  to the accompaniment of tambourine and harp,

and make merry to the sound of the flute.

Ayub 35:10

35:10 But no one says, ‘Where is God, my Creator,

who gives songs in the night, ² 

[21:12]  ¹ tn The verb is simply “they take up [or lift up],” but the understood object is “their voices,” and so it means “they sing.”

[35:10]  ² tn There have been several attempts to emend the line, none of which are particularly helpful or interesting. H. H. Rowley (Job [NCBC], 225) says, “It is a pity to rob Elihu of a poetic line when he creates one.”
