[2:8]  1 tn This is probably a variant name for almug trees; see 9:10-11 and the parallel passage in 1 Kgs 10:11-12; cf. NLT. One or the other probably arose through metathesis of letters.

[2:8]  2 tn Heb “know.”

[2:10]  3 sn As a unit of dry measure a kor was roughly equivalent to six bushels (about 220 liters).

[2:10]  4 tn Heb “20,000 baths” (also a second time later in this verse). A bath was a liquid measure roughly equivalent to six gallons (about 22 liters), so this was a quantity of about 120,000 gallons (440,000 liters).

[2:16]  5 tn Heb “and we will cut down trees from Lebanon according to all your need.”

[2:16]  6 tn Heb “to you,” but this phrase has not been translated for stylistic reasons – it is somewhat redundant.

[2:16]  7 tn Or “on rafts.” See the note at 1 Kgs 5:9.

[15:16]  8 tn Heb “mother,” but Hebrew often uses “father” and “mother” for grandparents and even more remote ancestors.

[15:16]  9 tn The Hebrew term גְּבִירָה (gÿvirah) can denote “queen” or “queen mother” depending on the context. Here the latter is indicated, since Maacah was the wife of Rehoboam and mother of Abijah.

[21:7]  10 tn Heb “house.”

[21:7]  11 tn Or “covenant.”

[21:7]  12 tn Heb “which he made to David, just as he had promised to give him and his sons a lamp all the days.” Here “lamp” is metaphorical, symbolizing the Davidic dynasty.

[22:7]  13 tn Heb “From God was the downfall of Ahaziah by going to Joram.”

[22:7]  14 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Ahaziah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[22:7]  15 tn Heb “anointed.”

[22:7]  16 tn Heb “to cut off the house of Ahab.”

[23:3]  17 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jehoiada the priest, cf. v. 8) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[34:31]  18 tc This assumes an emendation to עַמּוּדוֹ (’ammudo), see 23:13. The MT reads “at his place.”

[34:31]  19 tn Heb “cut,” that is, “made” or “agreed to.”

[34:31]  20 tn Heb “walk after.”

[34:31]  21 tn Or “soul.”

[34:31]  22 tn Heb “words.”
