20:14 Isaiah the prophet visited King Hezekiah and asked him, “What did these men say? Where do they come from?” Hezekiah replied, “They come from the distant land of Babylon.” 20:15 Isaiah 1  asked, “What have they seen in your palace?” Hezekiah replied, “They have seen everything in my palace. I showed them everything 2  in my treasuries.” 20:16 Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to the word of the Lord, 20:17 ‘Look, a time is 3  coming when everything in your palace and the things your ancestors have accumulated to this day will be carried away to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the Lord. 20:18 ‘Some of your very own descendants whom you father 4  will be taken away and will be made eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’”

40:9 Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan, took an oath so as to give them and their troops some assurance of safety. 5  “Do not be afraid to submit to the Babylonians. 6  Settle down in the land and submit to the king of Babylon. Then things will go well for you.

[20:15]  1 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Isaiah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:15]  2 tn Heb “there was nothing I did not show them.”

[20:17]  3 tn Heb “days are.”

[20:18]  4 tn Heb “Some of your sons, who go out from you, whom you father.”

[40:9]  5 tn The words “so as to give them some assurance of safety” are not in the text but are generally understood by all commentators. This would be a case of substitution of cause for effect, the oath, put for the effect, the assurance of safety (NJPS translates directly “reassured them”).
