36:13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him vow allegiance ¹  in the name of God. He was stubborn and obstinate, and refused to return ²  to the Lord God of Israel.

Yeremia 5:2

5:2 These people make promises in the name of the Lord. ³ 

But the fact is, ⁴  what they swear to is really a lie.” ⁵

[36:13]  ² tn Heb “and he stiffened his neck and strengthened his heart from returning.”

[5:2]  ³ tn Heb “Though they say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives.” The idea of “swear on oath” comes from the second line.

[5:2]  ⁴ tc The translation follows many Hebrew mss and the Syriac version in reading “surely” (אָכֵן, ’akhen) instead of “therefore” (לָכֵן, lakhen) in the MT.
