11:2 But the Lord told Shemaiah the prophet, ¹

11:1 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he summoned 180,000 skilled warriors from Judah and Benjamin ²  to attack Israel and restore the kingdom to Rehoboam.

12:22 But the crowd ³  began to shout, ⁴  “The voice of a god, ⁵  and not of a man!”

[11:2]  ¹ tn Heb “and the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying.”

[11:1]  ² tn Heb “he summoned the house of Judah and Benjamin, 180,000 chosen men, accomplished in war.”

[12:22]  ³ tn The translation “crowd” is given by BDAG 223 s.v. δῆμος; the word often means a gathering of citizens to conduct public business. Here it is simply the group of people gathered to hear the king’s speech.

[12:22]  ⁴ tn The imperfect verb ἐπεφώνει (epefwnei) is taken ingressively in the sequence of events. Presumably the king had started his speech when the crowd began shouting.

[12:22]  ⁵ sn The voice of a god. Contrast the response of Paul and Barnabas in Acts 14:13-15.
