28:6 He said to me, ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build my temple and my courts, for I have chosen him to become my son and I will become his father.

The Son Is Superior to Angels

1:5 For to which of the angels did God ⁵  ever say, “You are my son! Today I have fathered you”? ⁶  And in another place ⁷  he says, ⁸  “I will be his father and he will be my son.” ⁹

[1:32]  ² sn Compare the description of Jesus as great here with 1:15, “great before the Lord.” Jesus is greater than John, since he is Messiah compared to a prophet. Great is stated absolutely without qualification to make the point.

[1:32]  ³ sn The expression Most High is a way to refer to God without naming him. Such avoiding of direct reference to God was common in 1st century Judaism out of reverence for the divine name.

[1:5]  ⁵ tn Grk “he”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:5]  ⁶ tn Grk “I have begotten you.”
