[32:30]  1 tn Heb “and it was on the morrow and Moses said to the people.”

[32:30]  2 tn The text uses a cognate accusative: “you have sinned a great sin.”

[32:30]  3 tn The form אֲכַפְּרָה (’akhappÿrah) is a Piel cohortative/imperfect. Here with only a possibility of being successful, a potential imperfect nuance works best.

[21:7]  4 tn The verb is the Hiphil jussive with a vav (ו) consecutive from the verb סוּר (sur); after the imperative this form may be subordinated to become a purpose clause.

[21:1]  5 sn This chapter has several events in it: the victory over Arad (vv. 1-3), the plague of serpents (vv. 4-9), the approach to Moab (vv. 10-20), and the victory over Sihon and Og (vv. 21-35). For information, see D. M. Gunn, “The ‘Battle Report’: Oral or Scribal Convention.” JBL 93 (1974): 513-18; and of the extensive literature on the archaeological site, see EAEHL 1:74-89.

[21:1]  6 sn The name Arad probably refers to a place a number of miles away from Tel Arad in southern Israel. The name could also refer to the whole region (like Edom).

[21:1]  7 tn Or “the south”; “Negev” has become a technical name for the southern desert region and is still in use in modern times.

[12:19]  8 tn Heb “for we have added to all our sins an evil [thing] by asking for ourselves a king.”

[12:1]  9 tn Heb “Look, I have listened to your voice.”

[12:1]  10 tn Heb “to all which you said to me.”

[12:1]  11 tn Heb “and I have installed a king over you.”

[18:24]  12 tn Elijah now directly addresses the prophets.

[18:24]  13 tn Heb “the God.”

[18:24]  14 tn Heb “The matter [i.e., proposal] is good [i.e., acceptable].”

[37:4]  15 tn Heb “all the words of the chief adviser whom his master, the king of Assyria, sent to taunt the living God.”

[37:4]  16 tn Heb “and rebuke the words which the Lord your God hears.”

[37:4]  17 tn Heb “and lift up a prayer on behalf of the remnant that is found.”

[15:1]  18 tn The words “pleading for” have been supplied in the translation to explain the idiom (a metonymy). For parallel usage see BDB 763 s.v. עָמַד Qal.1.a and compare usage in Gen 19:27, Deut 4:10.

[15:1]  sn Moses and Samuel were well-known for their successful intercession on behalf of Israel. See Ps 99:6-8 and see, e.g., Exod 32:11-14, 30-34; 1 Sam 7:5-9. The Lord is here rejecting Jeremiah’s intercession on behalf of the people (14:19-22).

[15:1]  19 tn Heb “my soul would not be toward them.” For the usage of “soul” presupposed here see BDB 660 s.v. נֶפֶשׁ 6 in the light of the complaints and petitions in Jeremiah’s prayer in 14:19, 21.

[15:1]  20 tn Heb “Send them away from my presence and let them go away.”
