[2:24]  1 tn Heb “house.”

[8:44]  2 tn Heb “When your people go out for battle against their enemies in the way which you send them.”

[8:56]  5 tn Heb “he has given a resting place to his people Israel.”

[8:56]  6 tn Heb “not one word from his entire good word he spoke by Moses his servant has fallen.”

[13:26]  7 tn Heb “and the prophet who had brought him back from the road heard.”

[13:26]  8 tn Heb “the man of God.”

[13:26]  9 tn Heb “the mouth of the Lord.”

[13:26]  10 tn Heb “broke him,” or “crushed him.”

[13:32]  13 map For location see Map4 G4; Map5 C1; Map6 E3; Map7 D1; Map8 G3.

[13:32]  14 tn Heb “Samaria.” The name of Israel’s capital city here stands for the northern kingdom as a whole. Actually Samaria was not built and named until several years after this (see 1 Kgs 16:24), so it is likely that the author of Kings, writing at a later time, is here adapting the old prophet’s original statement.

[14:15]  15 tn The elliptical Hebrew text reads literally “and the Lord will strike Israel as a reed sways in the water.”

[14:15]  16 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 22, 31).

[14:15]  17 tn Heb “the River.” In biblical Hebrew this is a typical reference to the Euphrates River. The name “Euphrates” has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[14:15]  18 tn Heb “because they made their Asherah poles that anger the Lord”; or “their images of Asherah”; ASV, NASB “their Asherim”; NCV “they set up idols to worship Asherah.”

[14:15]  sn Asherah was a leading deity of the Canaanite pantheon, wife/sister of El and goddess of fertility. She was commonly worshiped at shrines in or near groves of evergreen trees, or, failing that, at places marked by wooden poles. These were to be burned or cut down (Deut 12:3; 16:21; Judg 6:25, 28, 30; 2 Kgs 18:4).

[22:39]  19 tn Heb “As for the rest of the acts of Ahab and all that he did, and the house of ivory which he built and all the cities which he built, are they not written on the scroll of the events of the days of the kings of Israel?”
