[2:2]  1 tn Heb “going the way of all the earth.”

[10:23]  2 tn Heb “King Solomon was greater than all the kings of the earth with respect to wealth and with respect to wisdom.”

[8:60]  3 tn Heb “so that.”

[8:60]  4 tn Heb “the Lord, he is the God, there is no other.”

[10:15]  5 tn Heb “traveling men.”

[15:12]  6 tn The word used here, גִלּוּלִים [gillulim], is always used as a disdainful reference to idols. It is generally thought to have originally referred to “dung pellets” (cf. KBL 183 s.v. גִלּוּלִים). It is only one of several terms used in this way, such as “worthless things” (אֱלִילִים, ’elilim), “vanities” or “empty winds” (הֲבָלִים, havalim).

[15:12]  7 tn Heb “fathers” (also in v. 24).

[22:46]  8 tn Heb “and the rest of the male cultic prostitutes who were left in the days of Asa his father, he burned from the land.” Some understand the verb בִּעֵר (bier) to mean “sweep away” here rather than “burn.” See the note at 1 Kgs 14:10.

[22:46]  sn Despite Asa’s opposition to these male cultic prostitutes (see 1 Kgs 15:12) some of them had managed to remain in the land. Jehoshaphat finished what his father had started.

[1:40]  9 tn Heb “and all the people went up after him, and the people were playing flutes and rejoicing with great joy and the ground split open at the sound of them.” The verb בָּקַע (baqa’, “to split open”), which elsewhere describes the effects of an earthquake, is obviously here an exaggeration for the sake of emphasis.

[4:34]  10 tn Heb “the wisdom of Solomon.”

[8:27]  11 tn Heb “Indeed, can God really live on the earth?” The rhetorical question expects the answer, “Of course not,” the force of which the translation above seeks to reflect.

[10:24]  12 tc The Old Greek translation and Syriac Peshitta have “all the kings of the earth.” See 2 Chr 9:23.

[10:24]  13 tn Heb “and all the earth was seeking the face of Solomon to hear his wisdom which God had placed in his heart.”

[18:6]  14 tn The Hebrew text has “alone” here and again in reference to Obadiah toward the end of the verse.

[20:27]  15 tn The noun translated “small flocks” occurs only here. The common interpretation derives the word from the verbal root חשׂף, “to strip off; to make bare.” In this case the noun refers to something “stripped off” or “made bare.” HALOT 359 s.v. II חשׂף derives the noun from a proposed homonymic verbal root (which occurs only in Ps 29:9) meaning “cause a premature birth.” In this case the derived noun could refer to goats that are undersized because they are born prematurely.

[8:23]  16 tn Heb “said.”

[8:23]  17 tn Heb “one who keeps the covenant and the loyal love.” The expression is a hendiadys.

[8:23]  18 tn Heb “who walk before you with all their heart.”

[8:53]  19 tn Or “For.”

[8:53]  20 tn Heb “your inheritance.”

[20:7]  21 tn Heb “elders.”

[20:7]  22 tn Heb “Know and see that this [man] is seeking trouble.”

[8:43]  23 tn Heb “and do all which the foreigner calls to [i.e., “requests of”] you.”

[8:43]  24 tn Heb “your name.” See the note on the word “reputation” in v. 41.

[8:43]  25 tn Heb “fear.”

[8:43]  26 tn Heb “that your name is called over this house which I built.” The Hebrew idiom “to call the name over” indicates ownership. See 2 Sam 12:28.
