Solomon’s Wealth

10:14 Solomon received 666 talents ¹  of gold per year, ² 

Matius 2:11

2:11 As they came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down ³  and worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, ⁴  and myrrh. ⁵ 

[10:14]  ¹ tn The Hebrew term כִּכָּר (kikkar, “circle”) refers generally to something that is round. When used of metals it can refer to a disk-shaped weight made of the metal or to a standard unit of weight, generally regarded as a talent. Since the accepted weight for a talent of metal is about 75 pounds, this would have amounted to about 50,000 pounds of gold (cf. NCV); CEV, NLT “twenty-five tons”; TEV “almost 23,000 kilogrammes.”

[10:14]  ² tn Heb “the weight of the gold which came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold.”

[2:11]  ³ tn Grk “they fell down.” BDAG 815 s.v. πίπτω 1.b.α.ב has “fall down, throw oneself to the ground as a sign of devotion, before high-ranking persons or divine beings.”

[2:11]  ⁴ sn Frankincense refers to the aromatic resin of certain trees, used as a sweet-smelling incense (L&N 6.212).

[2:11]  ⁵ sn Myrrh consisted of the aromatic resin of certain shrubs (L&N 6.208). It was used in preparing a corpse for burial.
