1 Tawarikh 11:1-3

David Becomes King

11:1 All Israel joined David at Hebron and said, “Look, we are your very flesh and blood! ¹  11:2 In the past, even when Saul was king, you were Israel’s commanding general. ²  The Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel; you will rule over my people Israel.’” 11:3 When all the leaders ³  of Israel came to the king at Hebron, David made an agreement ⁴  with them in Hebron before the Lord. They anointed ⁵  David king over Israel, just as the Lord had announced through Samuel. ⁶

11:2 In the past, even when Saul was king, you were Israel’s commanding general. ⁷  The Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel; you will rule over my people Israel.’”

2:3 Don’t keep speaking so arrogantly, ⁸ 

letting proud talk come out of your mouth!

For the Lord is a God who knows;

he ⁹  evaluates what people do.

2:4 The bows of warriors are shattered,

but those who stumble find their strength reinforced.

The Ark Causes Trouble for the Philistines

5:1 Now the Philistines had captured the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 5:2 The Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the temple of Dagon, where they positioned it beside Dagon. 5:3 When the residents of Ashdod got up early the next day, ¹⁰  Dagon was lying on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and set him back in his place.

[2:3]  ⁸ tn Heb “proudly, proudly.” If MT is original, the repetition of the word is for emphasis, stressing the arrogance of those addressed. However, a few medieval Hebrew manuscripts and some other textual witnesses do not reflect the repetition, suggesting that the Hebrew text may be dittographic.

[2:3]  ⁹ tc The MT (Qere) reads “and by him actions are weighed.” The translation assumes that reading of the Qere וְלוֹ (vÿlo, “and by him”), which is supported by many medieval Hebrew mss, is correct, rather than the reading of the Kethib וְלוֹא (vÿlo’, “and not”).

[5:3]  ¹⁰ tc The LXX adds “they entered the temple of Dagon and saw.”
