Otniel

3:7 Orang Israel melakukan apa yang jahat di mata TUHAN, mereka melupakan TUHAN, Allah mereka, dan beribadah kepada para Baal dan para Asyera. 3:8 Lalu bangkitlah murka TUHAN terhadap orang Israel, sehingga Ia menjual mereka kepada Kusyan-Risyataim, raja Aram-Mesopotamia dan orang Israel menjadi takluk kepada Kusyan-Risyataim delapan tahun lamanya. 3:9 Lalu berserulah orang Israel kepada TUHAN, maka TUHAN membangkitkan seorang penyelamat bagi orang Israel, yakni Otniel, anak Kenas adik Kaleb. 3:10 Roh TUHAN menghinggapi dia dan ia menghakimi orang Israel. Ia maju berperang, lalu TUHAN menyerahkan Kusyan-Risyataim, raja Aram, ke dalam tangannya, sehingga ia mengalahkan Kusyan-Risyataim. 3:11 Lalu amanlah negeri itu empat puluh tahun lamanya. Kemudian matilah Otniel anak Kenas.

Peristiwa-peristiwa sejarah ini mengungkap beberapa kebenaran mendasar:

1) Kecenderungan alami umat Allah, bahkan setelah mengalami kebangunan dan pemulihan, adalah kemerosotan rohani kembali. Hanya iman yang sungguh-sungguh, rasa bersyukur yang tulus, usaha yang tekun untuk mencari wajah Allah, dan penolakan terus-menerus terhadap cara hidup fasik masyarakat kafir akan memungkinkan umat Allah memelihara kasih, visi, dan kemurnian mereka yang semula.
2) Sejarah keselamatan mengungkapkan umat yang enggan untuk belajar dan mengambil manfaat dari kemerosotan rohani dan dampak yang menyedihkan dari angkatan orang percaya sebelumnya.
3) Pemberontakan dan ketidakpercayaan bukan hal sepele; keduanya merupakan penghinaan terhadap Allah yang benar dan akan mendatangkan hukuman-Nya. Ketika umat Allah merendahkan atau berkompromi dalam hal standar-standar mereka yang berasal dari Allah, mereka akan kehilangan berkat-berkat yang dijanjikan dan kehadiran-Nya sebagai Bapa.
4) Allah adalah Allah yang bermurah hati, selalu siap untuk menanggapi seruan pertobatan umat-Nya. Dia senantiasa memungkinkan terjadinya suatu permulaan baru oleh kasih karunia melalui iman kepada-Nya
