  Goodly were thy tents, O Israel, Spread along the river’s side; Bright thy star, which rose prophetic, Herald of dominion wide; Fairer are the homes of freemen, Scattered o’er our broad domain; Brighter is our rising daystar, Ush’ring in a purer reign. Welcome to the glorious freedom, Which our fathers hither brought; Welcome to the priceless treasure, Which with constant faith they sought! See, from ev’ry nation gath’ring, Swarming myriads throng our coasts, Hear, with steady steps advancing, Ceaseless tread of countless hosts. God of nations! Our Preserver, Hear our prayers, our counsels bless; Lift o’er all Thy radiant banner, On these souls Thy love impress; From Thy throne of endless blessing O’er our land Thy Spirit pour; In the grandeur of Thine empire Reign supreme from shore to shore.

• [Bil 24:17] Come, And Christ The Lord Be Praising

  Come, and Christ the Lord be praising, Heart and mind to Him be raising, Celebrate His love amazing, Worthy folk of Christendom. Sin, death, hell, may all be grieving, Satan shame feel to him cleaving; We salvation free receiving, Cast our every care away. See what God for us provideth, Life that in His Son abideth, And our weary steps He guideth From earth’s woe to heav’nly joy. His soul deeply for us feeleth, He His love to us revealeth, He Who is in the heavens dwelleth Came to save us from our foe. Jacob’s star His advent maketh, Soothes the longing heart that acheth, And the serpent’s head He breaketh, Scattering the powers of hell. Op’d hath He and freedom gained us From the prison that contained us, Where much grief and sorrow pained us, And our hearts were bowed with woe. O blest hour when we receivèd From the foe who us deceivèd Liberty, when we believèd, And Thee, gracious Spirit, praised. Beauteous Infant in the manger, O befriend us! beyond danger Bring us where is turned God’s anger Where with angel hosts we’ll praise.

• [Bil 24:17] What Star Is This, With Beams So Bright?

  What star is this, with beams so bright, More lovely than the noonday light? ’Tis sent to announce a newborn King, Glad tidings of our God to bring. ’Tis now fulfilled what God decreed, “From Jacob shall a star proceed”; And lo! the Eastern sages stand To read in heaven the Lord’s command. While outward signs the star displays, An inward light the Lord conveys, And urges them, with force benign, To seek the Giver of the sign. True love can brook no dull delay; Nor toil nor dangers stop their way Home, kindred, father land and all They leave at their Creator’s call. O, while the star of heavenly grace Invites us, Lord, to seek Thy face, May we no more that grace repel, Or quench that light which shines so well! To God the Father, God the Son, And Holy Spirit, Three in One, May every tongue and nation raise An endless song of thankful praise!

• [Bil 24:17] When Marshaled On The Nightly Plain

  When, marshaled on the nightly plain, The glittering hosts bestud the sky, One star alone of all the train Can fix the sinner’s wandering eye. Hark! hark! to God the chorus breaks, From every host, from every gem; But one alone the Savior speaks, It is the Star of Bethlehem. Once on the raging seas I rode, The storm was loud, the night was dark, The ocean yawned, and rudely blowed The wind that tossed my foundering bark. Deep horror then my vitals froze, Death-struck, I ceased the tide to stem; When suddenly a star arose, It was the Star of Bethlehem. It was my guide, my light, my all; It bade my dark forebodings cease; And through the storm and danger’s thrall, It led me to the port of peace. Now safely, moored, my perils o’er I’ll sing, first in night’s diadem, Forever and forevermore, The star! The Star of Bethlehem!
