Dread Jehovah, God of nations,From Thy temple in the skies,Hear Thy people’s supplications,Now for their deliverance rise.
Lo, with deep contritions turning,Humbly at Thy feet we bend;Hear us, fasting, praying, mourning;Hear us, spare us, and defend.
Though our sins, our hearts confounding,Long and loud for vengeance call,Thou hast mercy more abounding,Jesus’ blood can cleanse from all.
Let that love veil our transgressions,Let that blood our guilt efface:Save Thy people from oppression,Save from spoil Thy holy place.
Now may the God of power and graceAttend His people’s humble cry!Jehovah hears when Israel prays,And brings deliverance from on high.
The Name of Jacob’s God defendsBetter than shields or brazen walls; He from His sanctuary sendsSuccor and strength, when Zion calls.
Well He remembers our sighs,His love exceeds our best deserts; His love accepts the sacrificeOf humble groans and broken hearts.
In His salvation is our hope,And in the Name of Israel’s God,Our troops shall lift their banners upOur navies spread their flags abroad.
Some trust in horses trained for war,And some of chariots make their boasts; Our surest expectations areFrom Thee, the Lord of heav’nly hosts.
O may the memory of Thy NameInspire our armies for the fight! Our foes shall fall and die with shame,Or quit the field with shameful flight.
Now save us, Lord, from slavish fear; Now let our hopes be firm and strongTill the salvation shall appear,And joy and triumph raise the song.
Carry the standard bravelyInto the world’s great field;Never desert our army,Never give up our shield.
Onward, onward, onward!Cheerily, cheerily sing;O carry the standard bravelyFor Christ, the Lord, our King;O carry the standard bravelyFor Christ, the Lord, our King.
Carry the standard firmly,Bear it where’er we go;Wave it in youth’s bright morning,Love for the Lord to show.
Carry the standard nobly,Asking for aid divine;Praying for light and wisdomOver the path to shine.
The royal banners forward go,The cross shines forth in mystic glow;Where He in flesh, our flesh Who made,Our sentence bore, our ransom paid.
Where deep for us the spear was dyed,Life’s torrent rushing from His side,To wash us in that precious flood,Where mingled water flowed, and blood.
Fulfilled is all that David toldIn true prophetic song of old,Amidst the nations, God, saith he,Hath reigned and triumphed from the tree.
O tree of beauty, tree of light!O tree with royal purple dight!Elect on whose triumphal breastThose holy limbs should find their rest.
Blest tree, whose chosen branches boreThe wealth that did the world restore,The price of humankind to pay,And spoil the spoiler of his prey.
Upon its arms, like balance true,He weighed the price for sinners due,The price which none but He could pay,And spoiled the spoiler of his prey.
O cross, our one reliance, hail!Still may thy power with us availTo give new virtue to the saint,And pardon to the penitent.
To Thee, eternal Three in One,Let homage meet by all be done:As by the cross Thou dost restore,So rule and guide us evermore.
Father, hear Thy children’s call;Humbly at Thy feet we fall,Prodigals, confessing all:We beseech Thee, hear us.
Christ, beneath Thy cross we blameAll our life of sin and shame,Penitent, we breathe Thy Name:We beseech Thee, hear us.
Holy Spirit, grieved and tried,Oft forgotten and defied,Now we mourn our stubborn pride:We beseech Thee, hear us.
Love that caused us first to be,Love that bled upon the tree,Love that draws us lovingly:We beseech Thee, hear us.
We Thy call have disobeyed,Into paths of sin have strayed,And repentance have delayed:We beseech Thee, hear us.
Sick, we come to Thee for cure,Guilty, seek Thy mercy sure,Evil, long to be made pure:We beseech Thee, hear us.
Blind, we pray that we may see,Bound, we pray to be made free,Stained, we pray for sanctity:We beseech Thee, hear us.
Thou Who hear’st each contrite sigh,Bidding sinful souls draw nigh,Willing not that one should die,We beseech Thee, hear us.
By the love that bids Thee spare,By the Heav’n Thou dost prepare,By Thy promises to prayer,We beseech Thee, hear us.
God the Father, God the Son,God the Spirit, Three in One,Hear us from Thy heavenly throne,Spare us, Holy Trinity.
