4:5 Now he came to a Samaritan town ¹  called Sychar, ²  near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. ³

The Samaritans Respond

4:39 Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, ⁴  “He told me everything I ever did.” 4:40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking ⁵  him to stay with them. ⁶  He stayed there two days,

[4:5]  ¹ tn Grk “town of Samaria.” The noun Σαμαρείας (Samareias) has been translated as an attributive genitive.

[4:5]  ² sn Sychar was somewhere in the vicinity of Shechem, possibly the village of Askar, 1.5 km northeast of Jacob’s well.

[4:40]  ⁵ tn Following the arrival of the Samaritans, the imperfect verb has been translated as ingressive.

[4:40]  ⁶ tn Because of the length of the Greek sentence and the sequencing with the following verse, the conjunction καί (kai) has not been translated here. Instead a new English sentence is begun.
