Yesaya 3:9

3:9 The look on their faces ¹  testifies to their guilt; ² 

like the people of Sodom they openly boast of their sin. ³ 

Too bad for them! ⁴ 

For they bring disaster on themselves.

nations are being assembled!

The Lord who commands armies is mustering

forces for battle.

Yesaya 19:25

19:25 The Lord who commands armies will pronounce a blessing over the earth, saying, ¹²  “Blessed be my people, Egypt, and the work of my hands, Assyria, and my special possession, ¹³  Israel!”

Yesaya 28:22

28:22 So now, do not mock,

or your chains will become heavier!

For I have heard a message about decreed destruction,

from the sovereign master, the Lord who commands armies, against the entire land. ¹⁴

33:16 This is the person who will live in a secure place; ¹⁵ 

he will find safety in the rocky, mountain strongholds; ¹⁶ 

he will have food

and a constant supply of water.

Nebo ¹⁸  bends low.

Babylon Will Fall

47:1 “Fall down! Sit in the dirt,

O virgin ²¹  daughter Babylon!

Sit on the ground, not on a throne,

O daughter of the Babylonians!

Indeed, ²²  you will no longer be called delicate and pampered.

[3:9]  ² tn Heb “answers against them”; NRSV “bears witness against them.”

[3:9]  ³ tn Heb “their sin, like Sodom, they declare, they do not conceal [it].”

[3:9]  ⁴ tn Heb “woe to their soul.”

[7:3]  ⁵ tn The name means “a remnant will return.” Perhaps in this context, where the Lord is trying to encourage Ahaz, the name suggests that only a few of the enemy invaders will return home; the rest will be defeated.

[7:3]  ⁶ tn Heb “the field of the washer”; traditionally “the fuller’s field” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NRSV); NIV “the Washerman’s Field.”

[7:11]  ⁷ tn Heb “Make it as deep as Sheol or make it high upwards.” These words suggest that Ahaz can feel free to go beyond the bounds of ordinary human experience.

[47:1]  ²¹ tn בְּתוּלַה (bÿtulah) often refers to a virgin, but the phrase “virgin daughter” is apparently stylized (see also 23:12; 37:22). In the extended metaphor of this chapter, where Babylon is personified as a queen (vv. 5, 7), she is depicted as being both a wife and mother (vv. 8-9).
