[3:5]  1 tn Or “high walls and barred gates” (NLT); Heb “high walls, gates, and bars.” Since “bars” could be understood to mean “saloons,” the qualifying adjective “locking” has been supplied in the translation.

[3:5]  2 tn The Hebrew term פְּרָזִי (pÿraziy) refers to rural areas, at the most “unwalled villages” (KJV, NASB “unwalled towns”).

[21:8]  3 tn Heb “Atone for.”

[21:8]  4 tn Heb “and do not place innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel.”

[22:1]  5 tn Heb “you must not see,” but, if translated literally into English, the statement is misleading.

[22:1]  6 tn Heb “brother’s” (also later in this verse). In this context it is not limited to one’s siblings, however; cf. NAB “your kinsman’s.”

[22:1]  7 tn Heb “hide yourself.”

[22:1]  8 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with the words “without fail.”

[23:3]  9 sn An Ammonite or Moabite. These descendants of Lot by his two daughters (cf. Gen 19:30-38) were thereby the products of incest and therefore excluded from the worshiping community. However, these two nations also failed to show proper hospitality to Israel on their way to Canaan (v. 4).

[23:3]  10 tn The Hebrew term translated “ever” (עַד־עוֹלָם, ’ad-olam) suggests that “tenth generation” (vv. 2, 3) also means “forever.” However, in the OT sense “forever” means not “for eternity” but for an indeterminate future time. See A. Tomasino, NIDOTTE 3:346.

[23:3]  11 tn Heb “enter the assembly of the Lord.” The phrase “do so” has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[28:32]  12 tn Heb “and there will be no power in your hand”; NCV “there will be nothing you can do.”

[28:49]  13 tn Heb “from the end of the earth.”

[28:49]  14 tn Some translations understand this to mean “like an eagle swoops down” (e.g., NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT), comparing the swift attack of an eagle to the attack of the Israelites’ enemies.

[32:6]  15 tn Or “treat” (TEV).
