The Holy and the Profane

14:1 You are children ¹  of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave your forehead bald ²  for the sake of the dead.

Ulangan 16:2

16:2 You must sacrifice the Passover animal ³  (from the flock or the herd) to the Lord your God in the place where he ⁴  chooses to locate his name.

Ulangan 20:18

20:18 so that they cannot teach you all the abhorrent ways they worship ⁵  their gods, causing you to sin against the Lord your God.

Ulangan 22:5

22:5 A woman must not wear men’s clothing, ⁶  nor should a man dress up in women’s clothing, for anyone who does this is offensive ⁷  to the Lord your God.

Ulangan 30:12-13

30:12 It is not in heaven, as though one must say, “Who will go up to heaven to get it for us and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” 30:13 And it is not across the sea, as though one must say, “Who will cross over to the other side of the sea and get it for us and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”

Ulangan 31:19

31:19 Now write down for yourselves the following song and teach it to the Israelites. Put it into their very mouths so that this song may serve as my witness against the Israelites!

[14:1]  ² sn Do not cut yourselves or shave your forehead bald. These were pagan practices associated with mourning the dead; they were not be imitated by God’s people (though they frequently were; cf. 1 Kgs 18:28; Jer 16:6; 41:5; 47:5; Hos 7:14 [LXX]; Mic 5:1). For other warnings against such practices see Lev 21:5; Jer 16:5.

[16:2]  ³ tn Heb “sacrifice the Passover” (so NASB). The word “animal” has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[20:18]  ⁵ tn Heb “to do according to all their abominations which they do for their gods.”

[22:5]  ⁶ tn Heb “a man’s clothing.”

[22:5]  ⁷ tn The Hebrew term תּוֹעֵבָה (to’evah, “offense”) speaks of anything that runs counter to ritual or moral order, especially (in the OT) to divine standards. Cross-dressing in this covenant context may suggest homosexuality, fertility cult ritual, or some other forbidden practice.
