[1:25]  1 tn Grk “who.” The relative pronoun was converted to a personal pronoun and, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[1:25]  2 tn Grk “the lie.”

[1:25]  3 tn Or “creature, created things.”

[2:17]  4 sn The law refers to the Mosaic law, described mainly in the OT books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

[2:17]  5 tn Grk “boast in God.” This may be an allusion to Jer 9:24.

[3:21]  6 tn Νυνὶ δέ (Nuni de, “But now”) could be understood as either (1) logical or (2) temporal in force, but most recent interpreters take it as temporal, referring to a new phase in salvation history.

[3:21]  7 tn Grk “being witnessed by the law and the prophets,” a remark which is virtually parenthetical to Paul’s argument.

[4:4]  8 tn Grk “not according to grace but according to obligation.”

[8:38]  9 tn BDAG 138 s.v. ἀρχή 6 takes this term as a reference to angelic or transcendent powers (as opposed to merely human rulers). To clarify this, the adjective “heavenly” has been supplied in the translation. Some interpreters see this as a reference to fallen angels or demonic powers, and this view is reflected in some recent translations (NIV, NLT).

[9:8]  10 tn Grk “That is,” or “That is to say.”

[9:8]  11 tn Because it forms the counterpoint to “the children of promise” the expression “children of the flesh” has been retained in the translation.

[9:8]  sn The expression the children of the flesh refers to the natural offspring.

[16:15]  12 tn Grk “saints.”

[16:17]  13 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:13.
