23:48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. ¹

4:23 Jesus ²  said to them, “No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ ³  and say, ‘What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, ⁴  do here in your hometown too.’”

Lukas 24:18

24:18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, ⁵  “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn’t know ⁶  the things that have happened there ⁷  in these days?”

[23:48]  ¹ sn Some apparently regretted what had taken place. Beating their breasts was a sign of lamentation.

[4:23]  ² tn Grk “And he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity. Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[4:23]  ³ sn The proverb Physician, heal yourself! means that Jesus should prove his claims. It is a “Prove it to us!” mentality that Jesus says the people have.

[4:23]  ⁴ sn The remark “What we have heard that you did at Capernaum” makes many suspect that Luke has moved this event forward in sequence to typify what Jesus’ ministry was like, since the ministry in Capernaum follows in vv. 31-44. The location of this event in the parallel of Mark 6:1-6 also suggests this transposition.

[24:18]  ⁵ tn Grk “answering him, said.” This is redundant in English and has been simplified in the translation.

[24:18]  ⁶ sn There is irony and almost a sense of mocking disbelief as the question “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that have happened there in these days?” comes to Jesus; but, of course, the readers know what the travelers do not.

[24:18]  ⁷ tn Grk “in it” (referring to the city of Jerusalem).
