Imamat 26:17

26:17 I will set my face against you. You will be struck down before your enemies, those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when there is no one pursuing you.

Yosua 7:8-13

7:8 If only we had been satisfied to live on the other side of the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say now that Israel has retreated ¹  before its enemies? 7:9 When the Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about this, they will turn against us and destroy the very memory of us ²  from the earth. What will you do to protect your great reputation?” ³ 

7:10 The Lord responded ⁴  to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying there face down? ⁵  7:11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenantal commandment! ⁶  They have taken some of the riches; ⁷  they have stolen them and deceitfully put them among their own possessions. ⁸  7:12 The Israelites are unable to stand before their enemies; they retreat because they have become subject to annihilation. ⁹  I will no longer be with you, ¹⁰  unless you destroy what has contaminated you. ¹¹  7:13 Get up! Ritually consecrate the people and tell them this: ‘Ritually consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the Lord God of Israel says, “You are contaminated, ¹²  O Israel! You will not be able to stand before your enemies until you remove what is contaminating you.” ¹³

Achan Sins and is Punished

7:1 But the Israelites disobeyed the command about the city’s riches. ¹⁴  Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, ¹⁵  son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, stole some of the riches. ¹⁶  The Lord was furious with the Israelites. ¹⁷ 

1 Samuel 4:2

4:2 The Philistines arranged their forces to fight ¹⁸  Israel. As the battle spread out, ¹⁹  Israel was defeated by ²⁰  the Philistines, who ²¹  killed about four thousand men in the battle line in the field.

1 Samuel 4:10

4:10 So the Philistines fought. Israel was defeated; they all ran home. ²²  The slaughter was very great; thirty thousand foot soldiers fell in battle.

Yesaya 30:17

30:17 One thousand will scurry at the battle cry of one enemy soldier; ²³ 

at the battle cry of five enemy soldiers you will all run away, ²⁴ 

until the remaining few are as isolated ²⁵ 

as a flagpole on a mountaintop

or a signal flag on a hill.”

Injustice Brings Alienation from God

59:1 Look, the Lord’s hand is not too weak ²⁶  to deliver you;

his ear is not too deaf to hear you. ²⁷ 

59:2 But your sinful acts have alienated you from your God;

Many scholars have suspected that the text originally read either וַתֵּט (vattet, “and it spread out”), from the root נטה (nth), or וַתִּקֶשׁ (vattiqesh, “and it grew fierce”), from the root קשׂה (qsh). The former suggestion is apparently supported by the LXX ἔκλινεν (eklinen, “it inclined”) and is adopted in the translation.
