50:23 Joseph saw the descendants of Ephraim to the third generation. ¹  He also saw the children of Makir the son of Manasseh; they were given special inheritance rights by Joseph. ²

50:1 Then Joseph hugged his father’s face. ³  He wept over him and kissed him.

2:21 Later ⁴  Hezron had sexual relations with ⁵  the daughter of Makir, the father of Gilead. (He had married ⁶  her when he was sixty years old.) She bore him Segub.

[50:23]  ¹ tn Heb “saw Ephraim, the children of the third.”

[50:23]  ² tn Heb “they were born on the knees of Joseph.” This expression implies their adoption by Joseph, which meant that they received an inheritance from him.

[50:1]  ³ tn Heb “fell on.” The expression describes Joseph’s unrestrained sorrow over Jacob’s death; he probably threw himself across the body and embraced his father.

[2:21]  ⁴ sn This means “later” in relation to the births of the three sons (Jerahmeel, Ram and Caleb) mentioned in v. 9.

[2:21]  ⁵ tn Heb “Hezron went to.”

[2:21]  ⁶ tn Heb “he took,” referring to taking in marriage.
