47:6 The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best region of the land. They may live in the land of Goshen. If you know of any highly capable men ¹  among them, put them in charge ²  of my livestock.”

6:3 But carefully select from among you, brothers, ³  seven ⁴  men who are well-attested, ⁵  full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge ⁶  of this necessary task. ⁷

[47:6]  sn Put them in charge of my livestock. Pharaoh is, in effect, offering Joseph’s brothers jobs as royal keepers of livestock, a position mentioned often in Egyptian inscriptions, because the Pharaohs owned huge herds of cattle.

[6:3]  ³ tn It is not clear from a historical standpoint (but it is unlikely) that women would have been involved in the selection process too. For this reason the translation “brothers” has been retained, rather than “brothers and sisters” (used in contexts where both male and female believers are clearly addressed).

[6:3]  ⁴ sn Seven. Jewish town councils often had seven members (Josephus, Ant. 4.18.14 [4.214]).
