[32:4]  1 sn Your servant. The narrative recounts Jacob’s groveling in fear before Esau as he calls his brother his “lord,” as if to minimize what had been done twenty years ago.

[32:17]  2 tn Heb “the first”; this has been specified as “the servant leading the first herd” in the translation for clarity.

[32:17]  3 tn Heb “to whom are you?”

[32:17]  4 tn Heb “and to whom are these before you?”

[42:25]  5 tn Heb “and they filled.” The clause appears to be elliptical; one expects “Joseph gave orders to fill…and they filled.” See GKC 386 §120.f.

[42:25]  6 tn Heb “and he did for them so.” Joseph would appear to be the subject of the singular verb. If the text is retained, the statement seems to be a summary of the preceding, more detailed statement. However, some read the verb as plural, “and they did for them so.” In this case the statement indicates that Joseph’s subordinates carried out his orders. Another alternative is to read the singular verb as passive (with unspecified subject), “and this was done for them so” (cf. NEB, NIV, NRSV).

[49:29]  7 tn The Hebrew text adds “and he said to them,” which is not included in the translation because it is redundant in English.

[49:29]  8 tn Heb “I am about to be gathered” The participle is used here to describe what is imminent.

[50:2]  9 tn Heb “his servants the physicians.”
