[25:33]  1 tn Heb “Swear to me today.”

[25:33]  2 tn Heb “and he”; the referent (Esau) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[25:33]  3 sn And sold his birthright. There is evidence from Hurrian culture that rights of inheritance were occasionally sold or transferred. Here Esau is portrayed as a profane person who would at the moment rather have a meal than the right to inherit. He will soon forget this trade and seek his father’s blessing in spite of it.

[47:8]  4 tn Heb “How many are the days of the years of your life?”

[35:10]  5 tn Heb “and he called his name Israel.” The referent of the pronoun “he” (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[35:10]  sn The name Israel means “God fights” (although some interpret the meaning as “he fights [with] God”). See Gen 32:28.

[29:1]  6 tn Heb “and Jacob lifted up his feet.” This unusual expression suggests that Jacob had a new lease on life now that God had promised him the blessing he had so desperately tried to gain by his own efforts. The text portrays him as having a new step in his walk.

[29:1]  7 tn Heb “the land of the sons of the east.”

[30:5]  8 tn Or “Bilhah conceived” (also in v. 7).

[30:5]  9 tn Heb “and she bore for Jacob a son.”

[35:15]  10 sn Called the name of the place. In view of the previous naming of Bethel in Gen 28:19, here Jacob was confirming or affirming the name through an official ritual marking the fulfillment of the vow. This place now did become Bethel, the house of God.

[35:15]  11 tn The name Bethel means “house of God” in Hebrew.
