36:31 These were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the Israelites: ² 

[14:5]  ¹ tn The Hebrew verb נָכָה (nakhah) means “to attack, to strike, to smite.” In this context it appears that the strike was successful, and so a translation of “defeated” is preferable.

[36:31]  ² tn Or perhaps “before any Israelite king ruled over [them].”
