6:14 Then the Lord himself ¹  turned to him and said, “You have the strength. ²  Deliver Israel from the power of the Midianites! ³  Have I not sent you?”

18:25 The Danites said to him, “Don’t say another word to us, or some very angry men ⁴  will attack you, and you and your family will die.” ⁵

19:17 When he looked up and saw the traveler ⁶  in the town square, the old man said, “Where are you heading? Where do you come from?”

[6:14]  ¹ sn Some interpreters equate the Lord and the messenger in this story, but they are more likely distinct. In vv. 22-23 the Lord and Gideon continue to carry on a conversation after the messenger has vanished (v. 21).

[6:14]  ³ tn Heb “the hand of Midian.”

[18:25]  ⁴ tn Heb “bitter in spirit.” This phrase is used in 2 Sam 17:8 of David and his warriors, who are compared to a bear robbed of her cubs.

[18:25]  ⁵ tn Heb “and you will gather up your life and the life of your house.”

[19:17]  ⁶ tn Heb “the man, the traveler.”
