Gideon Meets Some Visitors

6:11 The Lord’s angelic messenger ²  came and sat down under the oak tree in Ophrah owned by Joash the Abiezrite. He arrived while Joash’s son Gideon ³  was threshing ⁴  wheat in a winepress ⁵  so he could hide it from the Midianites. ⁶

6:26 Then build an altar for the Lord your God on the top of this stronghold according to the proper pattern. ⁷  Take the second bull and offer it as a burnt sacrifice on the wood from the Asherah pole that you cut down.”

17:2 He said to his mother, “You know ¹⁵  the eleven hundred pieces of silver which were stolen ¹⁶  from you, about which I heard you pronounce a curse? Look here, I have the silver. I stole ¹⁷  it, but now I am giving it back to you.” ¹⁸  His mother said, “May the Lord reward ¹⁹  you, my son!”

17:4 When he gave the silver back to his mother, she ²⁰  took two hundred pieces of silver ²¹  to a silversmith, who made them into a carved image and a metal image. She then put them in Micah’s house. ²²

18:27 Now the Danites ²³  took what Micah had made, as well as his priest, and came to Laish, where the people were undisturbed and unsuspecting. They struck them down with the sword and burned the city. ²⁴

[6:11]  ⁵ sn Threshing wheat in a winepress. One would normally thresh wheat at the threshing floor outside the city. Animals and a threshing sledge would be employed. In vv. 5 and 7 the angel refers to “God” (אֱלֹהִים, ’elohim), not the Lord (יְהוַה, yÿhvah). Manoah’s wife calls the visitor “a man sent from God” and “God’s messenger” (v. 6), while Manoah prays to the “Lord” (אֲדוֹנָי, ’adonay) and calls the visitor “a man sent from God” (v. 8).
