3:13 Eglon formed alliances with ¹  the Ammonites and Amalekites. He came and defeated Israel, and they seized the City of Date Palm Trees.

6:16 The Lord said to him, “Ah, but ²  I will be with you! You will strike down the whole Midianite army.” ³

8:11 Gideon went up the road of the nomads ⁴  east of Nobah and Jogbehah and ambushed the surprised army. ⁵

[6:16]  ² tn Or “certainly.”

[6:16]  ³ tn Heb “You will strike down Midian as one man.” The idiom “as one man” emphasizes the collective unity of a group (see Judg 20:8, 11). Here it may carry the force, “as if they were just one man.”

[8:11]  ⁴ tn Heb “the ones living in tents.”

[8:11]  ⁵ tn Heb “and attacked the army, while the army was secure.” The Hebrew term בֶטַח (vetakh, “secure”) probably means the army was undefended (see R. G. Boling, Judges [AB], 156), not suspecting an attack at that time and place.
