[28:36]  1 tc The LXX reads the plural “kings.”

[28:1]  2 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “indeed.”

[28:1]  3 tn Heb “commanding”; NAB “which I enjoin on you today” (likewise in v. 15).

[26:19]  4 tn Heb “may he smell.” The implication is that Saul should seek to appease God, for such divine instigation to evil would a sign of God’s disfavor. For a fuller discussion of this passage see R. B. Chisholm, Jr., “Does God Deceive?” BSac 155 (1998): 19-21.

[26:19]  5 tn Heb “but if the sons of men.”

[20:32]  6 tn Heb “what comes upon your mind.”

[20:32]  7 tn The Hebrew could also read: “Let us be.”

[20:32]  8 tn Heb “serving wood and stone.”

[20:32]  sn This verse echoes the content of 1 Sam 8:20.

[20:39]  9 sn Compare the irony here to Amos 4:4 and Jer 44:25.

[20:39]  10 tn Heb “and after, if you will not listen to me.” The translation leaves out “and after” for smoothness. The text is difficult. M. Greenberg (Ezekiel [AB], 1:374) suggests that it may mean “but afterwards, if you will not listen to me…” with an unspoken threat.

[20:39]  11 sn A similar concept may be found in Lev 18:21; 20:3.

[20:39]  12 tn Or “gifts.”

[7:42]  13 sn The expression and gave them over suggests similarities to the judgment on the nations described by Paul in Rom 1:18-32.

[7:42]  14 tn Or “stars.”

[7:42]  sn To worship the hosts of heaven. Their action violated Deut 4:19; 17:2-5. See Ps 106:36-43.

[7:42]  15 tn The two terms for sacrifices “semantically reinforce one another and are here combined essentially for emphasis” (L&N 53.20).

[7:42]  16 tn The Greek construction anticipates a negative reply which is indicated in the translation by the ‘tag’ question, “was it?”
