32:29 Moses said to them: “If the Gadites and the Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, each one equipped for battle in the Lord’s presence, and you conquer the land, ¹  then you must allot them the territory of Gilead as their possession.

Instructions to the Transjordanian Tribes

3:18 At that time I instructed you as follows: “The Lord your God has given you this land for your possession. You warriors are to cross over before your fellow Israelites ²  equipped for battle. 3:19 But your wives, children, and livestock (of which I know you have many) may remain in the cities I have given you. 3:20 You must fight ³  until the Lord gives your countrymen victory ⁴  as he did you and they take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Then each of you may return to his own territory that I have given you.”

1:13 “Remember what Moses the Lord’s servant commanded you. ⁵  The Lord your God is giving you a place to settle and is handing this land over to you. ⁶

[3:18]  ² tn Heb “your brothers, the sons of Israel.”

[3:20]  ³ tn The words “you must fight” are not present in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for clarity.

[3:20]  ⁴ tn Heb “gives your brothers rest.”

[1:13]  ⁵ tn Heb “remember the word which Moses, the Lord’s servant, commanded you.”

[1:13]  sn This command can be found in Deut 3:18-20. In vv. 13-15 Joshua paraphrases the command, as the third person reference to Moses in v. 14 indicates.

[1:13]  ⁶ tn Heb “is providing rest for you and is giving to you this land.”

[1:13]  sn “This land” refers to the trans-Jordanian lands allotted to these tribes.
