21:12 Jehoram ¹  received this letter from Elijah the prophet: “This is what the Lord God of your ancestor David says: ‘You ²  have not followed in the footsteps ³  of your father Jehoshaphat and of ⁴  King Asa of Judah,

Ahaz’s Reign

28:1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem. ⁵  He did not do what pleased the Lord, in contrast to his ancestor David. ⁶

30:8 Now, don’t be stubborn ⁷  like your fathers! Submit ⁸  to the Lord and come to his sanctuary which he has permanently consecrated. Serve the Lord your God so that he might relent from his raging anger. ⁹

34:3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his ancestor ¹⁰  David. In his twelfth year he began ridding ¹¹  Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, Asherah poles, idols, and images.

35:12 They reserved the burnt offerings and the cattle for the family divisions of the people to present to the Lord, as prescribed in the scroll of Moses. ¹² 

[21:12]  ¹ tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jehoram) has been specified in the translation for clarity and for stylistic reasons.

[21:12]  ² tn Heb “Because you…” In the Hebrew text this lengthy sentence is completed in vv. 14-15. Because of its length and complexity (and the tendency of contemporary English to use shorter sentences), the translation has divided it up into several English sentences.
