5:7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God? Can I kill or restore life? Why does he ask me to cure a man of his skin disease? ¹  Certainly you must see that he is looking for an excuse to fight me!” ² 

2 Raja-raja 7:9

7:9 Then they said to one another, “It’s not right what we’re doing! This is a day to celebrate, but we haven’t told anyone. ³  If we wait until dawn, ⁴  we’ll be punished. ⁵  So come on, let’s go and inform the royal palace.”

2 Raja-raja 8:13

8:13 Hazael said, “How could your servant, who is as insignificant as a dog, accomplish this great military victory?” ⁶  Elisha answered, “The Lord has revealed to me that you will be the king of Syria.” ⁷

10:9 In the morning he went out and stood there. Then he said to all the people, “You are innocent. I conspired against my master and killed him. But who struck down all of these men?

14:10 You thoroughly defeated Edom ⁸  and it has gone to your head! ⁹  Gloat over your success, ¹⁰  but stay in your palace. Why bring calamity on yourself? Why bring down yourself and Judah along with you?” ¹¹ 

2 Raja-raja 19:25

19:25 ¹² Certainly you must have heard! ¹³ 

Long ago I worked it out,

In ancient times I planned ¹⁴  it;

and now I am bringing it to pass.

The plan is this:

Fortified cities will crash

into heaps of ruins. ¹⁵

21:8 I will not make Israel again leave the land I gave to their ancestors, ¹⁶  provided that they carefully obey all I commanded them, the whole law my servant Moses ordered them to obey.”

[5:7]  ¹ tn Heb “Am I God, killing and restoring life, that this one sends to me to cure a man from his skin disease?” In the Hebrew text this is one lengthy rhetorical question, which has been divided up in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[5:7]  ² tn Heb “Indeed, know and see that he is seeking an occasion with respect to me.”

[7:9]  ³ tn Heb “this day is a day of good news and we are keeping silent.”

[7:9]  ⁴ tn Heb “the light of the morning.”

[7:9]  ⁵ tn Heb “punishment will find us.”

[8:13]  ⁶ tn Heb “Indeed, what is your servant, a dog, that he could do this great thing?” With his reference to a dog, Hazael is not denying that he is a “dog” and protesting that he would never commit such a dastardly “dog-like” deed. Rather, as Elisha’s response indicates, Hazael is suggesting that he, like a dog, is too insignificant to ever be in a position to lead such conquests.

[19:25]  ¹³ tn Heb “Have you not heard?” The rhetorical question expresses the Lord’s amazement that anyone might be ignorant of what he is about to say.

[19:25]  ¹⁵ tn Heb “and it is to cause to crash into heaps of ruins fortified cities.” The subject of the third feminine singular verb תְּהִי (tÿhi) is the implied plan, referred to in the preceding lines with third feminine singular pronominal suffixes.
