  We may not climb the heavenly steeps To bring the Lord Christ down; In vain we search the lowest deeps, For Him no depths can drown. But warm, sweet, tender, even yet A present help is He; And faith has still its Olivet, And love its Galilee. The healing of the seamless dress Is by our beds of pain; We touch Him in life’s throng and press, And we are whole again.   Lord, who the night You were betrayed did pray That all Your Church might be forever one; Help us at every Eucharist to say With willing heart and soul, “Your will be done.” That we may all one bread, one body be Through this, Your sacrament of unity. For all Your Church on earth, we intercede; Lord, make our sad divisions soon to cease; Draw us all closer, each to each, we plead, By drawing all to You, O Prince of Peace; So may we all one bread, one body be, Through this blest sacrament of unity. And hear our prayer for wanderers from Your fold; Restore them, too, Good Shepherd of the sheep, Back to the faith your saints confessed of old, And to the Church still pledged that faith to keep.   Son of God, eternal Savior, Source of life and truth and grace, Son of Man, whose birth incarnate Hallows all our human race, Thou, our Head Who, throned in glory, For Thine own dost ever plead, Fill us with Thy love and pity; Heal our wrongs, and help our need. Bind us all as one together In Thy Church’s sacred fold, Weak and healthy, poor and wealthy, Sad and joyful, young and old. Is there want, or pain, or sorrow? Make us all the burden share. Are there spirits crushed and broken? Teach us, Lord, to soothe their care. As Thou, Lord, hast lived for others, So may we for others live; Freely have Thy gifts been granted, Freely may Thy servants give.   He is gone—a cloud of light Has received Him from our sight; High in Heav’n, where eye of men Follows not, nor angels’ ken; Through the veils of time and space, Passed into the holiest place; All the toil, the sorrow done, All the battle fought and won. He is gone—and we remain In this world of sin and pain: In the void which He has left On this earth, of Him bereft. We have still His work to do, We can still His path pursue; Seek Him both in friend and foe, In ourselves His image show. He is gone—we heard Him say, “Good that I should go away,” Gone is that dear form and face, But not gone His present grace; Though Himself no more we see, Comfortless we cannot be: No, His Spirit still is ours, Quickening, freshening all ours powers. He is gone—towards their goal World and church must onward roll; Far behind we leave the past; Forward are our glances cast: Still His words before us range Through the ages as they change: Wheresoe’er the truth shall lead, He will give whate’er we need. He is gone—but we once more Shall behold Him as before; In the heaven of heavens the same, As on earth He went and came; In the many mansions there, Place for us He will prepare; In that world unseen, unknown, He and we shall yet be one.   Into the dim earth’s lowest parts descending, And bursting by Thy might the infernal chain That bound the prisoners, Thou, at three days’ ending, As Jonah from the whale, hast risen again. Thou brakest not the seal, Thy surety’s token, Arising from the tomb Who left’st in birth The portals of virginity unbroken, Opening the gates of Heaven to sons of earth. Thou, Sacrifice ineffable and living, Didst to the Father by Thyself atone As God eternal: resurrection giving To Adam, general parent, by Thine own.
